Ellen began working in wood as a
marquetry artist in 2004. She learned marquetry from John Eifler,
a well-known marquetarian who adapted a table-type fret saw to cut
pieces of veneer using the double-bevel technique.
She continues to participate in the open classroom that Eifler
established, where local
marquetry artists exchange ideas and learn from each other’s work.
She is a member of the American Marquetry Society and the Lafayette Art
Center, a gallery where local artists display their work.
Ellen “paints” with wood and enjoys exploring nontraditional subjects for
marquetry. For her, creating a
marquetry picture is a process of searching for the essential aspects of the
subject, and simplifying and translating them to a wood palette.
Ellen combines careful craftsmanship--fitting the pieces of wood together with
no gaps or flaws that detract from the image--with an artist’s vision to
create a picture that captures the depth and beauty of the subject.
